I was born in New Jersey to first- and second-generation Norwegian immigrants. With but one exception, all but one of my aunts and uncles were also from Norway. So, I grew up steeped in Norwegian customs and tales. The clans on both sides of the family were large – thirteen cousins on each side of the family. When I was a child, on the paternal side of the family, the clan camped every year on an island in the Narrows on Lake George. When we motored our boats out to Glen Island to check in with Ranger Biff, he would look at us with a smile. “So, the Andersen clan is back? I think I can get five campsites together on Mohican Island.” We were free to run and swim all around the island because we were always near the campsite of one our aunts and uncles. On my mother’s side of the family, we had Saturday reunions at my grandfather’s farm in the northwest corner of New Jersey. As kids, we ran through the woods, milked cows, played in the hayloft, and learned to shoot at targets. It was a good childhood and a close family. At thirteen, my parents enrolled me in an all-male prep school about forty-five minutes away from our home. I was distressed about that. I asked my mother, “How will I ever meet girls?” She replied, “I will drive you to church whenever you like.” And, so it was. I became very active in church and met a very pretty young girl, Elizabeth (Beti), when I was fourteen. We dated through much of high school. Both of us went to Wheaton College, a Christian school in Illinois. I also studied abroad at the University of Leiden and Oxford University (Balliol College). We married and then ventured out to attend Oregon State. My wife finished her BFA degree and I got an MBA from Oregon State University. After graduating, we went back east. I landed a job with PepsiCo and worked there for thirteen years in financial management and general management. Later, I went on to lead several successful turnaround teams, as CFO or CEO at Pepsi General Bottlers, Tonka/Kenner/Parker, Young America, Rollerblade, and The Bob Pike Group. We now have two daughters and three wonderful grandchildren. We live in Minnesota in the warmer months and North Carolina during the winter. I was an avid upland bird hunter for many years. I am still an avid golfer and fisherman. I think you will enjoy my books. There might be something for just about everyone in the library.
